2022: personal mythology
I set an intention and a goal for 2022, to create a finished piece of art for each month for the year. On top of my job and community responsibilities, I felt this goal was reasonably achievable.
The project quickly became a buoy in the storm that was 2022- helping me navigate and respond to personal and professional stresses (crises!). I was creating far more than just one piece a month, and the body of work took on a life of it's own. The morphing subject matter and the changing physical media used has helped me let go of goals of perfection and merit- I found I was still holding myself to those old expectations- mentally blocking me from my own voice and artistic progress.
As the year wore on, this project became a particularly transparent metaphor- with the work clearly made to help work through past generational trauma, addiction issues, and working towards shedding shame.
These selected works of 2022 are a catharsis. I intend to follow the narrative thread through 2023 in a more relaxed way. I hope to continue to be introspective to a truly (disgustingly) alienating extent.
Thank you for sharing.
